I know what you were going for with the out-of-focus stuff, but it’s a bit overdone. A touch of defocus can give a depth of field effect, but Damien here looks like he’s in the next county.
Usually it is just laziness for me when I choose to do out of focus backgrounds (hate doing backgrounds). Those early comics I would try to find pictures online or build through collage and then outline to try to make it look like it belonged. Was a bad artistic choice all around.

I choose to interpret it as a visual representation that Damien is so elated that he’s having an out of body experience. =]
My interpretation as well. Either that or the wallpaper is freaking him out…
Thankfully the under defined extreme expressions didn’t last. Anime has rotted a lot of people brains.
I would say it was more laziness, rather than anime influences. Every panel is a temptation to cut corners that I try to resist.
